Which Bhagavad Gita to gift a leader or manager
By Hyuma Mahadevia · Published 17 October 2026
The Bhagavad Gita is among the most gifted books in India. It is given at weddings, at retirements, at Diwali and on the first day of a new role. When the person receiving it leads a team, a company or a board, the question becomes which Bhagavad Gita to give, because the editions differ far more than their covers suggest.
I have owned a beautiful copy for years and read very little of it, and I know many leaders who would say the same. The edition decides whether the book is opened. Here are the four kinds you will find, what each is good for, and where the one I wrote belongs.
The four kinds of Bhagavad Gita you can gift
1. The scripture edition
The Sanskrit with a traditional commentary, as published by religious presses and spiritual organisations. This is the Bhagavad Gita for study and for the home shrine. It asks for Sanskrit, patience and a free evening, and it rewards all three. For a leader who already has a daily practice of reading scripture, it is a fine gift. For most working leaders it goes on the shelf.
2. The literary translation
A scholar or writer renders the whole poem in English, usually in a single flowing text with an introduction. These editions are good for reading the Bhagavad Gita end to end once, and some are beautifully made. They are silent on what a verse asks of a person who has forty people reporting to them on Monday morning.
3. The leadership book that draws on the Bhagavad Gita
Management teachers and practitioners have written books of essays that take themes from the Bhagavad Gita and apply them to leading. These are read like any business book: in a few sittings, cover to cover, with a handful of verses quoted along the way. They are a good introduction for a leader who has never opened the text. The Bhagavad Gita itself stays in the background.
4. The verse-by-verse edition written for leaders
All 700 verses, each on a page of its own, with the Sanskrit, a transliteration, the meaning in English and in Hindi, and then a teaching on what that verse asks of a person who leads others, with a question to sit with. The whole Bhagavad Gita is present, and every page speaks to the day ahead. This is the kind I could not find, so I wrote it. The Ethical Leader’s Gita is, as far as I know, the only edition of this kind in print. If you know of another, write to me and I will gladly list it here.
How to choose
Ask one question: will this person open the book on a Tuesday? A leader with a settled practice of scripture will value the first kind. A reader who loves literature will value the second. Someone new to the Bhagavad Gita who reads business books on flights will value the third. A leader who wants the Bhagavad Gita itself, in a form that fits a working morning and speaks to the decisions in front of them, will value the fourth.
For a gift to a leadership team, a board or a client list, the fourth kind has two further advantages. Every verse is in plain English and Hindi, so nobody on the list is excluded. And a page a morning is a habit a busy person can keep, which means the gift is opened a few hundred times.
For company gifts in India, the printed MRP also matters. Many companies keep gifts to employees under ₹5,000 because of the income tax rule on gifts from an employer. The MRP of The Ethical Leader’s Gita is ₹4,995. What the ₹5,000 limit means is explained here.

What does the Bhagavad Gita teach about leadership and management?
The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between a leader facing his hardest decision and his counsel. Its verses speak on duty, decision-making, accountability, anger, bias, ego, failure, pressure, succession and trust. The Ethical Leader’s Gita draws the teaching for a leader out of every verse and indexes them by management area. Read the areas here.
Can the Bhagavad Gita be gifted to clients and colleagues of every faith?
Yes, when the edition treats the Bhagavad Gita as a text on duty, decision and self-mastery and gives every verse in plain English and Hindi. The Ethical Leader’s Gita is written this way so that a whole leadership team or client list can receive it as a book about leading.
